Int'l Security Act preventive step to ensure security at Thai anti-gov't rally site

BANGKOK, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- With the imposition of the International Security Act as a preventive measure, police will be the main force to deal with a mass anti-government rally on this Sunday, the Thai government announced here Friday.

From Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, the government will impose the Internal Security Act at Dusit district in the center of capital Bangkok to ensure security during the mass anti-government rally planned by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

On Sunday at about 1.0 p.m. local time, the UDD protesters, or the red-shirted people, would gather at the Royal Plaza in Dusit district and march to Government House late in the afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), chaired by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban said the ISOC has resolved to set up a task force center to supervise security men, who will work to keep law and order at the UDD rally site.

The ISOC meeting has also resolved to establish security measures with the security men, who will work to ensure law and order, Suthep said.

Preliminarily, some 37 combined-police-military security companies will carry out the security measures as these security men will have baton, shield and equipment for crowd control, said Suthep.

Under the security plans, Suthep said initially police will be main force to keep law and order in Bangkok's Dusit district as "these security men will not carry any weapon."

With respecting human rights, all of the security measures will be carried out under international standard, Suthep said.

Also, he reiterates the government will attempt to minimize impact from the Act enforcement on the general public, Suthep said.
